So what now? You know regular shampoos and conditioners aren't allowed, but what's a girl supposed to do?

There is a secret, a miracle product that will restore your wig to its former glory and best of all, compared to the professional products that the beauticians try to convince you, it is quite cheap. It's fabric softener! This is how it works.

Basic maintenance

One of the biggest problems with synthetic wigs is that, like any other synthetic fiber, they become static after a while. This gives them a loose shape and that great style that you worked so hard on. Oh yeah, and who can forget the annoyance of the flying frizz you end up dealing with. Fortunately, all of these problems are quite easy to fix. This is what you do:

In a spray bottle, combine one part fabric softener with two parts cold water. (It is very important not to use hot water as it will melt the fibers. You can see how this can be a problem.)
Shake this mixture in the spray bottle until it is seriously well mixed.
Before going to bed, take off your wig and carefully place it on your wig stand. Then take the spray bottle and spritz or mist the wig from about 6 inches away. If it's a straight-haired wig, gently smooth down the unbridled hairs (with a good wig comb or bush, of course!) and style and let it dry until you're ready to put it on the next morning.

When it gets hard

As we've established, no matter how well you take care of it, that wig is going to look sad at some point. Still, there's no reason to throw it away. Try this instead:

Fill your sink with cold water and mix in about a cup of liquid fabric softener.
Slowly submerge your wig and start spinning it around in a figure eight. Leave it on for a good thirty minutes.
Then, using your thumb and forefinger, gently work on the particularly dirty or sticky bits, lift the wig out of the water, squeeze out the water (starting at the top of the wig), then dip and twist again (if you've managed to get your wig real. tangle, you can loosen the knots by gently parting the hairs with your fingers).
Repeat until you've loosened all the dirt and you think it's clean.
Now lift it out of the water, squeeze out the dirty water, drain the sink and fill it with clean (again, cold) water and submerge it.

Now: When you've rinsed the wig well, take it out of the water, gently but firmly squeeze out as much water as you can and hang it to dry. (The shower is usually a good spot.)
When your wig is completely dry, comb or brush it gently to remove the last knots. If there are really bad ones, better use your fingers first. If the wig is curled, just use your fingers to restore it to its former glory.
Aaannnd... You're done! Style your as good as new dress and wear it again with pride.
